Xerocon 2019 – Brisbane

By on 27th September 2019

Avril Hillind (Director), Arran Stone (Director) and Kaye Francis (Practice Manager) recently attended Xerocon 2019 at the Brisbane Convention Centre with 3000 other Accountants/Bookkeepers/Xero team members and App partners.  Not only was it great to be in the balmy temperatures of Brisbane but it was also inspiring to hear the fantastic speakers who were available to listen too.  We took out the overriding theme of the two days were wellness in the workplace and at home,  and how to bring your whole-self to work at the same time as getting the latest download on what Xero have been doing.

Craig Hudson, Managing Director New Zealand and Pacific Islands, keynote was about his mental health journey which was deeply personal and moving.  It would have taken a lot of guts to get up there and talk about something so personal. His finishing message was about building a community with purpose, and from your contribution and my contribution we both prosper. He is leading a Xero Assistance programme which is helping 5000 small business owners, their families and employees with mental health and wellbeing.

Check out this link by Steve Vamos, CEO Xero https://www.xero.com/blog/2019/09/human-insights-will-drive-the-success-of-small-business/ where he talks about new releases and what their focus is.  Throughout the Xero presentations were three words for small business delivery – SIMPLE, SMART and SEAMLESS.

“Tech does not innovate, people do”

We heard from our own Nigel Latta, if you ever get the opportunity to see him speak make sure you go he is very entertaining and slightly un-PC.  His key messages were about reducing friction and making people’s lives better – BE KIND.

Other speakers worth looking up were

  • Dr Richard Denniss, he talked about “Loving your things”, this was about Consumerism vs Materialism and was very insightful about the waste we are creating around the world.
  • Peter Baines OAM, – “It’s what people do not the position they hold.”
  • Ros Harvey – how to transform your data to solve real world problems
  • Jaya Baloo, all about the future of privacy, cyber-security and the impact of quantum computing on both

We all came back feeling energised with lot of ideas on how we can do things differently.
